For those of you that don’t know, a Holga is a cheap medium format toy camera that is widely appreciated for it’s crudeness. Originally released in 1982 and intended to be an inexpensive mass-market camera for the Chinese working-class, the Holga’s substandard construction and simple meniscus lens caused quality issues ranging from light leaks to vignetting. However, it is these imperfections that have been advantageous for photographers seeking to create surrealistic scenes. Getting the intended results with a Holga can take much time and effort, but the results are well worth it when you do succeed. I came across a post on booooooom about a Flickr gallery created with a Holga in New York City by a Paris based designer stephanie *. Worth a look see…I have yet to shoot with one of these bad boys, but I look forward to rectifying that soon. Hopefully I will be able to get some decent results with one and post them up here.
